Natura 2000 - balancing man and nature
The Grand Causses Regional Natural Park administers one of the largest natural areas in Europe, south of the Massif Central. Subject to continental, mediterranean and mountainous, climatic influences, this area has an incredibly rich flora and fauna - at least 124 species of nesting birds live here!
The European Union has developed a system that promotes conservation of biodiversity, called Natura 2000. In total, 19 parks and other sites are included in the Natura 2000 network. These sites are identified for the scarcity or ecological value of their plant and animal species and the different natural habitats that are present.
To preserve these species, it is essential to preserve the environment which they inhabit and manage human activities, promoting practices that help to maintain the natural balance.
